Senator Hyde-Smith Helps Introduce Additional Protection for Military Students
A Senator from Mississippi, Cindy Hyde-Smith, has helped to enact protection for students who are also serving in the military.
According to WJTV, Senator Hyde-Smith along with Senator Maggie Hassan, introduced legislation that is part of the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA. The Servicemember Enrollment and Readmission for Valuable Education (SERVE) Act will help to ensure that students who are also serving in the Reserve and National Guard will be guaranteed readmission to their schools in the event that a mobilization occurs.
According to WJTV, the SERVE Act has removed a “more than 30 days” stipulation currently in place. The current stipulation only requires readmission for students who are mobilized for over thirty days, so those who are mobilized for less time are not guaranteed readmission.
Hyde-Smith feels that the bill will help to ensure that military students will continue to pursue a higher education.
