Effective Options for Trapping Wild Hogs, Mississippi Wildlife Department Says

Wild hog trapping methods vary based on budget and goals. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks recommends several options for those looking to control hog populations.

One option is a “smart” trap that uses advanced technology to increase success rates. These traps can feature remote triggering, video monitoring, and fast-closing mechanisms. While highly efficient, they often require a larger initial investment, according to the department.

Another method involves passive net trap systems. These lightweight, circular nets are designed to exploit hogs’ natural behaviors. They allow for continuous trapping, as hogs inside can attract others. Some systems include smart technology for remote control but do not rely on electronics, making them more affordable upfront. Setup and maintenance may require additional time, the department notes.

Corral traps with saloon- or guillotine-style doors provide another effective approach. Built from common materials, these traps are suitable for whole sounder removal and offer a lower initial cost. Proper design and management can ensure years of service with moderate effort for setup and transportation.

While box and cage traps can capture individual hogs, the department emphasizes they are less effective for removing entire sounders and are not ideal for long-term population control.
