Escapee in Prentiss County Arrested After Search
An inmate who escaped from the county work program in Prentiss County has been recaptured, authorities announced Tuesday.
The escapee, identified as 25-year-old Austin Michael Smith, was last seen running through the woods east of the Justice Center wearing no shirt, orange jail pants, and red tennis shoes. Smith, a white male listed at 5 feet 11 inches and 210 pounds, was arrested yesterday and was scheduled for release Friday.
Law enforcement agencies, including Booneville Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and Tupelo Police drone operators, participated in the search. The drone located Smith and directed officers on the ground to his location, according to authorities.
Officials emphasized that Smith is not considered armed or dangerous. They urged the public to report any information about his whereabouts by calling 911 or the sheriff’s office at 662-728-6232.
