North Mississippi is experiencing severe winter weather, including freezing temperatures and icy precipitation, according to state officials. The Mississippi Department of Transportation reports icy roads and bridges in 25 counties in the northern part of the state.
While MDOT continues to treat highways, conditions are expected to worsen. Authorities advise residents to avoid traveling if possible. The state is in contact with local emergency managers across Mississippi and is deploying resources to counties that request assistance.
So far, 32 counties have submitted 87 requests for state aid. Approximately 1,100 residents are without power, a number expected to rise as the storm persists. Utility crews are working to restore electricity as quickly as possible.
More than 40 warming shelters are open or scheduled to open statewide. For updates on shelter locations and storm conditions, residents are encouraged to visit the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s website. The state of emergency remains in effect until at least Jan. 27. Officials advise residents to monitor weather forecasts throughout the weekend.
