Mississippi Department of Transportation Advises Caution Amid Severe Winter Weather
The Mississippi Department of Transportation issued an update Wednesday morning, warning drivers of hazardous winter weather conditions across the state.
Both directions of Interstate 55 from the Mississippi state line to north of Yalobusha are experiencing severe icing and extreme congestion, with reports of fallen trees, power lines, and storm debris in Yalobusha County, according to MDOT.
Interstate 22 from the Mississippi state line to Potts Camp is also affected by severe icing and congestion. MDOT recommends that motorists avoid these routes for safety reasons.
MDOT reported ice on roads and bridges in 28 counties, including Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.
The agency emphasized the importance of staying off impacted roadways. Motorists can check the latest conditions via the MDOT Traffic app or at MDOTtraffic.com. Authorities urge drivers to prioritize safety and avoid travel until conditions improve.
