Mississippi faces heightened wildfire risk this weekend, weather service warns
The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued an elevated fire danger warning for Saturday, citing dry air and gusty winds that increase wildfire risk across Mississippi.
Forecasters warn that low humidity combined with high winds could create critical wildfire conditions statewide. The environment is particularly vulnerable due to ongoing dry conditions and increased fuel loads from recent natural disasters, including February winter storms.
The weather service reports that wind gusts could carry embers up to half a mile, potentially igniting new fires far from the original source. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow local burn bans.
Several counties, including Alcorn, Hinds, Benton, Rankin, Marshall, and Tishomingo, have enacted strict burn bans, prohibiting all outdoor burning. Residents are advised to check for updates on burn restrictions regularly through the Mississippi Forestry Commission’s website.
Officials emphasize the importance of wildfire prevention during this period of heightened risk.
