Mississippi governor requests federal disaster aid after winter storms

Governor Tate Reeves has requested a Major Disaster Declaration for several counties affected by winter storms that swept across Mississippi from Jan. 23 to Jan. 27, 2026.

The request includes individual assistance, disaster unemployment benefits, and public assistance for local governments, including debris removal efforts, according to Reeves’ office. Mississippi has been working with FEMA, state agencies, and local officials to assess damage and ensure the criteria for federal aid are met.

Reeves said the state is committed to helping residents recover from what he described as a historic winter weather event. He emphasized that the state will continue to utilize all available resources to support recovery efforts. Reeves also noted that as more damages are identified and verified, the request may be expanded to include additional counties for aid.

FEMA and federal officials will review the state’s request and determine eligibility for disaster assistance, according to Reeves’ office.
