Mississippi Legislature Acts on State Audit Recommendations to Reduce Waste
The Mississippi PEER Committee has released a report outlining strategies to cut waste across state agencies, according to a statement from the Office of the State Auditor.
The report focuses on three key issues that the office has previously highlighted. It recommends reducing unnecessary cell phone expenses, noting that in 2022, state government spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on phones that were rarely used or turned off.
The report also suggests selling underused state-owned vehicles. Officials estimate that eliminating underutilized vehicles could save taxpayers significant funds.
Additionally, the report advocates for eliminating unused office space and canceling wasteful leases, potentially saving up to $6 million. The Office of the State Auditor expressed support for the initiatives and reiterated its willingness to collaborate on reducing government waste.
