Mississippi Wildlife Officials Share Tips for Identifying Wild Turkeys

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks provided tips for identifying wild turkeys in the field during its recent Turkey Tuesday post.

According to the department, distinguishing between an adult male turkey, known as a tom or gobbler, and a juvenile male, called a jake, involves examining three main features.

First, the beard length. Toms have longer, more prominent beards, while jakes’ beards are shorter and less noticeable. Second, the spurs. Adult gobblers possess longer, sharper spurs, whereas jakes’ spurs are smaller and less defined. Third, the tail fan. A tom’s tail feathers form a smooth, even fan, while a jake’s tail appears uneven, with longer feathers in the center.

The department also noted that body size and overall build can aid identification, as toms are generally larger and more robust than jakes. Experts recommend paying close attention to these features for confident identification in the field.
