Tax season sees rise in phishing, smishing, and AI scams, Mississippi warns
Tax season, running from January through April, has led to a surge in scams targeting taxpayers in Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR) urges residents to be cautious of phishing, smishing, and AI-driven impersonation schemes.
The department emphasizes that it will never request payments via text message or phone calls. It also states that it does not initiate contact through email, text, or social media to request personal or financial information. Instead, initial contact regarding tax issues typically occurs through regular mail or through the taxpayer’s online account.
Officials advise taxpayers to hang up immediately if they receive a suspicious call. If a text message appears suspicious, recipients should delete it and report it. The department provides resources for reporting tax fraud and additional information at its website.
Taxpayers can report scams and learn more at the Mississippi Department of Revenue’s website: dor.ms.gov/report-tax-fraud. The department also encourages residents to use the Taxpayer Access Point at tap.dor.ms.gov.
