Corinth’s DT Sheffield Named to Prestigious Biletnikoff Award Watch List

Rutgers wide receiver and Corinth native DT Sheffield continues to earn national attention, landing a spot on the 2025 Biletnikoff Award Watch List. The honor, announced Wednesday, recognizes him among the top receivers in college football.

Sheffield wasted no time proving why he belongs on the list. In Rutgers’ matchup against Ohio, the former North Texas standout hauled in multiple catches for 85 yards, including a highlight-reel touchdown grab that electrified the Scarlet Knights’ offense.

The Biletnikoff Award is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding wide receiver, regardless of position. Established in 1994 and named for Florida State legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff, the award has gone to some of the game’s biggest names. Past winners include Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, and Larry Fitzgerald. More recently, Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, and Travis Hunter have claimed the honor.

This is Sheffield’s second straight year on the preseason watch list, making him the first Rutgers player to receive the recognition since Bo Melton in 2020 and 2021. Earlier this month, he was also named to the Hornung Award watch list, which highlights the most versatile player in college football.

Sheffield transferred to Rutgers this offseason following a standout career at North Texas. In 2024, he posted career-best numbers with 66 receptions, 822 yards, and 11 touchdowns. He also showcased his skills on special teams, averaging 12.1 yards on punt returns and 21.7 yards on kick returns.

With his explosive debut in a Scarlet Knights uniform and national recognition now rolling in, Sheffield is quickly establishing himself as one of the most dynamic players in the Big Ten heading into the 2025 season.
