Mississippi launches online database to track taxpayer-funded nonprofits
Mississippi officials acknowledged that they cannot determine the total amount of taxpayer money allocated to nonprofits, nor can they produce a comprehensive list of recipients, according to a recent investigation.
In an effort to increase transparency, the state’s non-profit database was created by the news organization. The Non-Profit Spending Dashboard allows Mississippians to see every nonprofit that has received government funds since 2021.
While some state agencies request millions of dollars from taxpayers for website updates, the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor demonstrated that new services can be provided to taxpayers without additional funding requests, the organization said.
This initiative aims to provide residents with clear information about government spending and hold agencies accountable for their use of public funds.
