As spring break approaches, officials remind beachgoers about the dangers of rip currents. These powerful channels of water can quickly pull swimmers away from shore.
Experts advise that if caught in a rip current, the most important action is to stay calm. Swimmers should avoid panicking and instead swim parallel to the shoreline until they are out of the current.
Once free, swimmers are encouraged to signal for help and then head back to the beach. Lifeguards and safety officials emphasize that awareness and calm responses can prevent drownings during peak beach season.
