Heat Wave Continues in the Mid-South, Authorities Warn of High Risk

A prolonged heat wave is affecting the Mid-South region, with temperatures and heat indices reaching dangerous levels, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.

Extreme Heat Warnings, indicating heat indices above 110°F, are in effect for parts of the area. Heat Advisories, for heat indices above 105°F, are also in place. These alerts are scheduled to last through 8 p.m. CDT Sunday, though officials say they may be extended into early next week.

Maximum heat index values could reach as high as 113°F in locations such as Clarksdale, Mississippi, today, the weather service said. Residents are advised to take safety precautions, including frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and limiting outdoor time.

Officials also remind residents never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles and to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing is recommended. Authorities encourage people to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members to ensure their safety amid the ongoing heat wave.
