Mississippi Fishery Officials Launch Bass Tagging Study at Ross Barnett Reservoir
Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) fisheries staff have begun a largemouth bass tagging study at Ross Barnett Reservoir. The project involves fitting bass over 19 inches with orange T-bar tags to monitor their survival, growth, and movement after tournaments.
Biologists collect data such as length, weight, and tag numbers at the time of release. They rely on anglers to report recaptures to help build a better understanding of how these fish use the reservoir over time. To date, more than 200 bass have been tagged, including several trophy-sized fish.
MDWFP encourages anglers to assist by reporting any tagged bass caught outside of tournament events. Reports should include the tag number, capture location, a clear photo of the tag, and whether the fish was released or harvested. Reports can be sent via text to (601) 691-4874.
Anglers are advised to leave the tag in place if the fish is released, as the study is ongoing. The tags have no monetary or prize value and are solely used for scientific research, according to MDWFP.
