Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks kicked off the 2026 youth turkey season Saturday with a JAKES Day at Leaf River Wildlife Management Area in South Mississippi.
In partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation, MDWFP hosted more than 100 children under age 15 for a day of outdoor activities and turkey hunting education. Attendees participated in turkey call demonstrations led by experts and learned gun safety from MDWFP conservation officers.
Many kids received giveaway items, including guns, kayaks, and turkey gear. The event also featured various hands-on activities aimed at inspiring future hunters.
MDWFP thanked local sponsors and community partners for making the event possible. Officials wished good luck to all participating youth this spring season.
