Mississippi Senate approves bill criminalizing illegal immigration

The Mississippi State Senate has approved a bill that makes illegal immigration a state crime, marking a significant legislative development after years of unsuccessful attempts. The measure was supported after State Auditor Shad White highlighted the financial impact of illegal immigration on taxpayers.

White’s office estimates that illegal immigration costs Mississippi taxpayers up to $100 million annually. The new legislation aims to curb illegal entry and redirect these funds toward benefiting Mississippians, officials said.

Following White’s announcement, the bill finally gained passage in the Senate, which had previously blocked similar measures. Supporters argue the law will help enforce immigration laws at the state level and reduce the economic strain caused by unauthorized immigrants.
