Mississippi Wildlife Biologists Band and Track Wood Ducks This Fall

Mississippi wildlife biologists are capturing and banding resident wood ducks across the state from July through September. Each bird receives a uniquely numbered metal band on its leg, and its age and sex are recorded before release.

The banding helps scientists track the ducks’ movements and harvest rates, providing crucial data for population monitoring. Because dense wetlands make counting these birds difficult, banding offers a reliable way to gather information over time.

Anyone who harvests or encounters a banded bird is encouraged to visit reportband.gov and enter the band information. Reporters receive an email with details about where and when the bird was banded. They also contribute to wildlife conservation efforts by providing valuable data for researchers.
