Mississippi wildlife officers conduct refresher training on twin-engine vessel operations

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks officers recently completed refresher training on operating the agency’s 30-foot Port Security Vessels. These vessels are significantly larger than many others in the fleet and require specialized handling.

The training included backing and maneuvering courses, boat ramp loading and unloading, vessel approach operations, docking procedures, on-water obstacle courses, and towing exercises, officials said. The sessions aim to keep officers proficient and prepared for patrols, emergency responses, and public safety missions on Mississippi waters.

As boating season continues, officials encourage boaters to familiarize themselves with their vessels, take certified education courses, and ensure safety equipment is onboard and functional. Proper training and preparation are vital for safe operations, officials added. They emphasized that responsible boating and safety awareness are essential when operating watercraft on Mississippi’s waterways.
