Mississippi sets new spring turkey harvest record with nearly 18,000 birds
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced a record turkey harvest during the 2026 spring season. According to MDWFP, hunters checked in 17,907 turkeys through Game Check, surpassing the previous record of 15,498 set in 2024.
This marks the highest reported harvest since mandatory reporting began in 2019. Several Wildlife Management Areas recorded historic numbers, with some setting all-time records and others reaching levels not seen in over 40 years.
The 2026 season also was the first year of the Mississippi Wild Turkey Stamp. More than 31,000 hunters contributed to wild turkey conservation through the program. Funds generated will support habitat work and research to sustain turkey populations.
Experts cited strong hatch rates, increased hunter participation, and favorable spring weather as factors in the successful season. MDWFP officials said they will continue efforts to provide quality turkey hunting opportunities across the state.
