The National Weather Service in Memphis announced the rollout of new probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts for this summer. The updates aim to provide additional context behind the five categories of HeatRisk: Little/None, Minor, Moderate, Major, and Extreme.
According to the NWS, users can now see the likelihood of their local HeatRisk reaching a particular category. For example, if an outdoor event cannot proceed if HeatRisk hits “Major,” the forecast can help determine if that threshold is likely. The current forecast indicates a Moderate risk, but users can explore the probability of an upgrade to Major by selecting that category on the interactive map.
By zooming into their town and clicking on the map, residents can view a detailed weekly HeatRisk forecast and probability graphs. This tool aims to enhance public safety and preparedness during the summer heat season, the NWS said.
