Red Foxes Common Across Mississippi with Notable Vocalizations
Red foxes are prevalent throughout Mississippi, thriving in forests, farmland, and suburban areas. They are easily identified by their rusty-red coats, black ‘stockings,’ and white-tipped tails, according to wildlife experts.
These animals have a wide range of vocalizations, including a high-pitched, piercing scream used for communication with other foxes. Their keen hearing allows them to detect small animals moving beneath leaves or grass, enabling precise hunting.
By feeding mainly on rodents and other small mammals, red foxes help control pest populations and play an important role in the state’s ecosystem, wildlife officials said. The species is well-adapted to various habitats across Mississippi.
