Corinth to begin issuing citations and possibly shutting down businesses who do not comply with mask mandate

The City of Corinth issued a notice that they will begin issuing citations to businesses who do not comply with the governors mask mandate, according to a release from the city on August 17th.

From the release:

To Whom It May Concern:

It has come to my attention that several businesses in the City of Corinth are not properly enforcing Gov. Tate
Reeves’ Executive Order which requires everyone inside a business to wear a face covering with few exceptions.

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 1516 as extended by EO 1518 until August 31, 2020: “Every person in Mississippi shall
wear a face covering, covering the nose and mouth, while inside a business, school or other building or space open to
the public.

Most establishments understand the seriousness of COVID-19 and understand that the wearing of face masks is a
highly effective method to prevent the spread of the virus. The Alcorn County area has been fortunate to have relatively
low infection rates. We have opened our schools and attempted to return commercial activity to normal. All of this is in
jeopardy if every possible procedure is not followed to curb the transmission of COVID-19.

Anyone who fails to
understand the implication of ignoring the Governor’s directives is not only placing all of the citizens at risk, but
ultimately may cause their business to be shuttered.

I am again requesting that businesses police themselves and their customers. I implore all of the commercial
establishments in the City of Corinth to fully enforce the “face mask” mandate within their buildings. Please do not allow
anyone to enter your business who is not wearing a face mask as required by the Governor’s Order.

The City of Corinth fully intends to enforce the Governor’s mandate and will begin issuing citations for any
business or persons within businesses who fail to have a face covering. Specifically, Mississippi Code 33-15-43
provides for violations of a Governor’s emergency order to be “…be punishable by a fine not exceeding Five Hundred
Dollars ($500.00) or imprisonment for not exceeding six (6) months or both.”

By working together, we can get through
this.
Sincerely Yours,
Tommy
Mayor of the City of Corinth
