Several individuals received prison sentences Thursday, November 6, in Alcorn County Circuit Court following guilty pleas and probation revocations, according to First District Attorney Jason Herring. Circuit Court Judge Kelly L. Mims handed down the sentences.
Maleka Burns, 29, of Corinth, pled guilty to aggravated assault and felony shoplifting. She was sentenced to 20 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
Prosecutors said the aggravated assault charge arose from an incident in which Burns fired a gun at a moving vehicle on Cruise Street in Corinth after a verbal dispute between two groups. The Corinth Police Department investigated the case, with Detective Heather Russell leading the investigation.
In addition to the assault case, Burns faced multiple shoplifting charges stemming from investigations conducted by police departments in Corinth, Booneville, Iuka, and Tupelo.
