Mississippi Auditor Launches New Audit to Uncover Waste in Small State Agencies

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi State Auditor Shad White announced a new audit initiative targeting small agencies, boards, and commissions. The effort, led by the Auditor’s Government Accountability Division, aims to identify wasteful spending and violations of state laws and regulations, White said.

During his tenure, White’s office has uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars in waste across state government, including large agencies, he said. The new audit expands the scope to smaller, often-overlooked government entities, White added.

White’s office previously conducted an audit called Project Momentum, which found waste in large agencies, such as excessive spending on vehicles, office space, and technology. The audit also highlighted misuse of the state plane by politicians and overspending outside the classroom in education.

“It’s time to look at the small agencies, too,” White said. “I’ve tasked my staff with auditing and analyzing these tucked-away, sometimes-forgotten government offices.” The work is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2027.
