Mississippi Department of Wildlife Warns Boaters to Use Navigational Lights at Night

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks advises boaters to use navigational lights whenever visibility drops after sunset or in fog, rain, or other adverse conditions.

Boaters should ensure their lights are functioning correctly before heading out. This includes checking that all lights work, the white stern light is positioned high enough for 360-degree visibility, and that additional lights do not interfere with standard navigation signals.

Red and green bow lights help other boaters determine direction. The red light appears on the port (left) side, and the green on the starboard (right) side. A white light visible from all directions is required for powerboats under 39.4 feet and helps others see the vessel from behind or when anchored.

According to officials, proper use of these lights is not only a legal requirement but also essential for safety on Mississippi waters. Boaters are encouraged to perform quick safety checks before each trip to ensure their lighting system is fully operational.

Understanding and correctly using navigational lights can help prevent accidents and keep waterways safe for everyone, the department said.
