Mississippi DPS opens new unified headquarters, honoring late colonel

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety officially opened its new headquarters Thursday, marking the first time all divisions are housed under one roof, according to a release from the agency.

The facility is designed to enhance collaboration and improve the agency’s ability to serve residents of the state, officials said. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by state leaders and project partners.

Agency officials expressed gratitude to Governor Tate Reeves, the Mississippi Legislature, Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann, Speaker Philip Gunn, Eley Guild Hardy Architects, Andercorp, the Department of Finance and Administration, and the MDPS team for their roles in bringing the project to life.

The new building is named in honor of David Huggins, a former Mississippi Highway Patrol colonel and department commissioner. Huggins served as colonel from 1988 to 1992 and as commissioner from 2000 to 2004. His family was recognized during the dedication ceremony for his contributions to the agency.

Officials noted that Huggins’ leadership helped shape the department’s history. His legacy continues to influence the agency’s work today, making the day a significant milestone for MDPS and Mississippi.
