Mississippi estimates 22,000 illegal immigrants, $100M annual cost
Mississippi’s office estimates there are at least 22,000 illegal immigrants living in the state in 2024, according to a report. The office also estimates that illegal immigration costs Mississippi taxpayers $100 million each year.
Before the 2026 legislative session, State Auditor Shad White prioritized making illegal immigration a state crime. He said this change would enable state and local law enforcement to assist federal agencies more effectively.
White stated that the goal is to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent on priorities such as teachers’ salaries, law enforcement, tax cuts, and infrastructure projects like roads and bridges.
