Mississippi is under an extreme heat warning or advisory on July 28, 2026, as temperatures and heat indices reach dangerous levels, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Heat index values are expected to climb to between 110 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors, officials said.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Authorities also urge never to leave children or pets in parked vehicles, as temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
Outdoor activities should be limited during the hottest parts of the day. Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors when possible, ensure they have access to shade and fresh water, and walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid hot pavement that can harm paws.
Officials emphasize the importance of staying weather-aware, hydrated, and cautious during the heatwave to ensure safety across the state.
