Mississippi Office of the State Auditor reports summer initiatives including fraud convictions and audits

The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor announced several accomplishments this summer, including a guilty plea from a man attempting to fraudulently collect unemployment benefits, according to the office.

Additionally, auditors found that taxpayers paid up to $30.9 million during fiscal year 2024 for children reported absent from childcare centers receiving funding, the office said.

The office also launched a new audit initiative aimed at uncovering waste within smaller, overlooked boards and commissions. This effort seeks to identify inefficiencies and improper expenditures.

In collaboration with prosecutors, the Office of the State Auditor secured guilty pleas from former school superintendents who embezzled nearly $400,000, the office added.

The agency indicated that its work continues, with ongoing efforts to improve accountability and prevent fraud across state programs.
