Mississippi promotes ‘No Mow May’ to support wildlife habitat

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is encouraging landowners to participate in ‘No Mow May.’ The initiative aims to reduce recreational mowing that often destroys habitats for birds and mammals.

Wild grasses and wildflowers in uncut areas provide essential food and cover for wildlife during the summer months, allowing animals to nest and raise their young safely. Experts say that leaving these areas undisturbed benefits local ecosystems.

The department advises property owners to resist the urge to mow fields, edges, and roadside ditches during May. Instead, they should let the plants grow to support native wildlife populations.

For more information on habitat and wildlife management, residents can visit the department’s website. The initiative is part of broader efforts to promote habitat conservation on private lands.
