Spring brings young birds on the move in Mississippi
Spring is in full swing in Mississippi, and it’s common to see young animals, especially fledgling birds, on the move. Many of these birds leave their nests before they can fly, spending days or weeks hopping on the ground while their adult feathers develop, according to wildlife officials.
During this period, adult birds continue to feed and follow their fledglings as they learn to fly. While it’s normal to encounter these young birds on the ground, they and their parents are more vulnerable to predators, including domestic pets and other wildlife, officials said.
Wildlife experts advise residents not to handle or try to care for young birds unless directed by a permitted wildlife rehabilitator. If someone finds a bird that appears to need help, they should contact a licensed rehabber first. More information on wildlife rehabilitation centers is available through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
