Mississippi wildlife agency emphasizes importance of engine cut-off switches during Safe Boating Week

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is emphasizing the importance of using engine cut-off switches during National Safe Boating Week.

The safety device, also known as a lanyard, is connected to the vessel’s ignition. When the lanyard is disconnected, it automatically shuts off the engine, preventing the boat from running unattended.

Proper use of the engine cut-off switch can prevent accidents if the operator falls overboard, reducing the risk of the vessel continuing to operate uncontrolled and endangering passengers and others in the water, according to the agency.

The department recommends that boat operators always wear the cut-off switch while underway to enhance safety on the water.

This reminder comes as part of the agency’s efforts to promote safe boating practices during the week dedicated to water safety awareness.
