Iuka Public Library Adds Friday Hours After County Budget Boost

The Iuka Public Library will open an extra day each week after the Tishomingo County Board of Supervisors approved a 12.5% increase to its budget, the library announced Thursday, Oct. 8. The change adds Friday back to the library’s schedule, just days after a cut to its hours drew concern from patrons across Tishomingo County.

New Iuka Public Library Hours

The library posted its updated weekly schedule on Facebook:

  • Tuesday and Thursday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The library is closed Sunday, Monday and Wednesday under the new schedule. The post did not give a specific start date for the Friday hours, so patrons may want to call the library at 662-423-6300 before visiting on a Friday.

“Thanks to the Tishomingo County Board of Supervisors approving a 12.5% budget increase, we can open an additional day!” the library wrote, thanking both the community and the supervisors for their support.

A Partial Restoration After October Cuts

The announcement partly reverses a reduction that took effect Oct. 1. Before then, the library was open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Starting this month, it cut back to just Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The library’s funding was on the Tishomingo County Board of Supervisors’ agenda Oct. 5, and Thursday’s post confirms the board approved additional money. With Friday added back, the library will now be open four days and about 30 hours a week, compared with six days before the cuts.

Residents had spoken up about the reduced hours on social media, and commenters on Thursday’s post thanked those who made the library’s case to the board.

About the Library

The Iuka Public Library, at 204 N. Main St. in Iuka, is one of 13 branches in the Northeast Regional Library System. Like many rural libraries, it depends on a mix of county, city and regional funding to keep its doors open, provide computer and internet access, and run programs for children and adults.
