Alcorn County Election Results: Norvell Wins District 3 Seat
Unofficial Alcorn County election results from Tuesday’s Nov. 3 general election show Amy Norvell winning the special election for the District 3 seat on the county Election Commission. Alcorn County voters also gave large margins to U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly. All 17 precincts reported, and the totals include absentee ballots, according to returns published by the Daily Corinthian.
Alcorn County Election Results: Election Commission District 3
The only county-level race on the ballot was a special election to fill the District 3 seat on the Alcorn County Election Commission. The commission oversees voter rolls and election administration in the county.
- Amy Norvell: 1,177 votes (about 65%)
- Yulanda Hughey: 623 votes (about 35%)
About 1,800 votes were cast in that race, which only voters in the district could take part in.
Mississippi counties each have five election commissioners, one elected from each supervisor district. The commissioners maintain the county’s voter rolls, help train and appoint poll workers, and oversee the conduct of general elections. They also take part in the canvass that turns election-night totals into official results. The special election filled the remainder of the District 3 term.
U.S. Senate and Congress
In the U.S. Senate race, Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith carried Alcorn County with roughly 76% of the vote:
- Cindy Hyde-Smith (R): 8,356
- Scott Colom (D): 2,494
- Ty Pinkins (I): 190
In the 1st Congressional District, Republican incumbent Trent Kelly won about 78% of the county vote:
- Trent Kelly (R): 8,590
- Cliff Johnson (D): 2,284
- Johnny Baucom (L): 136
Kelly won re-election districtwide on Tuesday night, according to regional media reports. Hyde-Smith’s statewide result and the final official statewide tallies will be posted by the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office once counties certify their returns.
Alcorn County’s numbers closely track recent federal elections, in which Republican candidates have regularly won around three-quarters of the county vote.
Court of Appeals District 1, Place 1
In the nonpartisan Court of Appeals race, incumbent Judge John Weddle took about 78% of the Alcorn County vote:
- John Weddle: 7,473
- Derek Hopson Jr.: 2,166
What Happens Next
These totals are unofficial until election officials finish their canvass and certify the results. That process includes counting any eligible affidavit ballots and absentee ballots that arrive within the state’s post-election window. More than 11,000 ballots were cast in the Senate race in Alcorn County, following predictions of heavy turnout before Election Day.
Voters with questions about their ballot or the canvass can contact the Alcorn County Circuit Clerk’s office at the courthouse in Corinth.
