Prentiss County Election Nov. 3: What’s on the Ballot
The Prentiss County election is less than a week away. Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to decide a county school board seat, a U.S. Senate race and a state appeals court seat. Voters who need to cast an absentee ballot in person have until Saturday, Oct. 31.
Prentiss County Election: Local Races
Two county posts are on the ballot, according to the Booneville Banner-Independent:
- Prentiss County School Board, 5th District: The seat opened after the death of the board member who held it. Three candidates qualified by the August deadline.
- Election Commissioner, 3rd District: A special election will fill the rest of this term. The person the Board of Supervisors appointed earlier this year is the only candidate who qualified.
U.S. Senate and Judicial Races
At the top of the ballot, U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R) is seeking another full term. Her challengers are Democrat Scott Colom, the Lowndes County district attorney, and independent Ty Pinkins.
Hyde-Smith was appointed to the Senate in 2018 to replace the retiring Thad Cochran. She won her party’s primary in March and has President Donald Trump’s endorsement; Trump urged voters to back her at his Oct. 26 rally in Corinth. Colom won the Democratic nomination with about 73% of the vote, according to Mississippi Today. Pinkins ran for the Senate as a Democrat in 2024 against Sen. Roger Wicker and is now running as an independent. Democrats have not won a U.S. Senate race in Mississippi since 1982.
Prentiss County voters will also see these judicial races:
- Mississippi Court of Appeals, District 1, Place 1: Incumbent Judge John Weddle faces challenger Derek Dewayne Hopson Jr.
- Circuit Court, District 1, Place 2: Judge Paul Funderburk is not running again. Assistant District Attorney Josh Wise is unopposed for the seat.
The newspaper reports that the other chancery and circuit judge seats on the ballot are not contested.
