Williams remembered for preservation and community service
Williams chaired the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission and helped preserve the Corinth Contraband Camp and other landmarks. She also helped found the Corinth Symphony Orchestra and served two decades on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s Board of Trustees. Kossuth teachers to help write statewide lessons
Special education teachers Kelly Hart and Erin Eaton of Kossuth Elementary have been invited to a Mississippi Department of Education task force developing lessons based on the Mississippi Alternate Academic Achievement Standards. Alcorn County News’ report on the school board’s October meeting, citing the Daily Corinthian, says the lessons will support instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
Trustees also approved a $10,700 equipment grant for the Alcorn Career and Technical Center’s health science program. The district is preparing for the MPOWER College and Career Expo on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Crossroads Arena. The board’s next meeting is Nov. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the district administrative office.
Police chief credits partnerships for rally preparations
Police Chief Landon Tucker said Corinth officers had four days to prepare for President Donald Trump’s Oct. 26 rally at Crossroads Arena. About 40 city officers worked the event alongside the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and U.S. Secret Service, while regular police calls continued, according to Alcorn County News’ summary of Daily Corinthian reporting. Emergency medical crews treated some attendees for heat exhaustion, and workers distributed water.
In a related observance, the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department marked National First Responders Day on Oct. 28 by thanking law enforcement, firefighters, medical crews, dispatchers and correctional officers. The report also noted the agencies’ work at the Corinth rally earlier in the week.
