Kossuth Elementary Tailgate Teaches Character Lessons
The Kossuth Elementary tailgate had tents, games and plenty of team spirit, but there was no football game on the schedule. Instead, students at Kossuth Elementary School in Alcorn County recently spent a Friday morning in the schoolyard learning about responsibility, courage and self-direction through a character-building tailgate organized by parents and teachers.
Kossuth Elementary tailgate built around Capturing Kids’ Hearts
The event is part of the Alcorn School District’s Capturing Kids’ Hearts initiative, a program that focuses on leadership skills and social-emotional learning. Across all grade levels, the goal is to help students build strong character traits and positive relationships with classmates and teachers.
At the tailgate, activity stations rotated students through classic yard games, each tied to a character trait. According to the Daily Corinthian, the games included:
- Cornhole
- Hopscotch
- Cup stacking
- Other stations built around responsibility, courage and self-direction
“Are You Better Than an Aggie?”
A new addition this year gave the event a hometown twist. In a challenge called “Are You Better Than an Aggie?”, Kossuth High School athletes went head-to-head with elementary students in a series of sports contests.
Career coach Taylor Johnson said the high school volunteers were focused on helping their team win rather than on their own performance, a lesson in teamwork the younger students could see up close.
Learning character outside the classroom
Second grade teacher Allie Garcia-Glissen said the tailgate is meant to build character traits in children and help find “the heart and drive in the kids.” She said the outdoor format lets students experience those traits firsthand, without the usual classroom structure.
The bigger goal, she said, is for students to understand that good character matters far beyond the classroom walls.

Events like the Kossuth Elementary tailgate show how Alcorn County schools are pairing academics with lessons in leadership and personal responsibility. Mixing in high school athletes also gives younger students role models from their own community, the same Aggies they cheer for on Friday nights.
