Corinth Police Officers Mentor ACTC Law Students

Corinth police officers went to class this week to talk careers. They met with students in the Law and Public Safety program at the Alcorn Career and Technology Center (ACTC) and told them what it really takes to join a police department in Mississippi.

The visit was shared on the Alcorn Career and Technology Center’s Facebook page and reposted by the Corinth Police Department. Students heard from CPD Major Ben Moore and Officers Eli Buse and Shyanne Middleton.

What Corinth Police Officers Told Students

According to ACTC, students in the program have been studying the hiring process and the physical fitness requirements for becoming a police officer in Mississippi. The three officers added a firsthand view. ACTC said they talked about:

• What agencies look for when they hire new officers
• The physical fitness standards recruits must meet
• Their own experiences on the job
• The day-to-day realities of a career in law enforcement

The school’s post also included group photos of the students with the officers, in the classroom and outside next to a Corinth patrol car.

“We are grateful to our community partners who take the time to connect with our students and bring real-world career knowledge into the classroom,” the center wrote, and it thanked Major Moore, Officer Buse and Officer Middleton for “investing in our students.”

A Pathway Into Public Safety Careers

Career and technical programs like ACTC’s Law and Public Safety course let high school students explore a field before they graduate. Hearing from working officers gives them a realistic picture of the job, from the application and testing steps to the physical demands of the work.

In Mississippi, statewide minimum standards and academy training for law enforcement officers are set by the Board on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Training. Individual departments, including Corinth’s, run their own hiring steps on top of those standards.

Local agencies have a stake in these early connections. Departments around the region are always looking for qualified recruits, and students who grow up in Alcorn County may one day serve the communities they know best.

Corinth Police Stay Active in Local Schools

The ACTC visit is the latest in a string of school outreach efforts by the department. Earlier this month, Corinth officers also visited Corinth Elementary for career day and talked with younger students about police work.
