Belmont wins Mississippi PIE Award for innovative street maintenance and cost-sharing efforts

JACKSON, Miss. — The City of Belmont has been honored with the Mississippi Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Award, announced by State Auditor Shad White.

The city earned the award for launching Operation Pothole, a strategic project to identify and mark potholes, secure competitive pricing for materials and labor, and extend the lifespan of roads. Belmont also created a cost-sharing arrangement through regional garbage services by subcontracting with neighboring municipalities, helping to offset equipment costs such as a new garbage truck, White said.

White emphasized that the PIE Awards celebrate government entities that demonstrate innovation through cost savings, waste reduction, and improved services. “We launched the PIE Awards to honor public servants who think outside the box and find new ways to save taxpayers money,” he said. “It’s important to highlight when government is working well.”

Mayor Brandon Pharr expressed pride in the recognition, stating that Belmont’s goal is to serve citizens better while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. “This award is a reflection of the hard work of our employees, leadership, and everyone committed to moving Belmont forward,” he said.

Vice Mayor Ken Dulaney praised the efforts, noting the importance of practical solutions to improve public services. “We are proud of the work being done in Belmont and proud to see those efforts recognized at the state level,” he added.
