Mississippi braces for severe storms and dangerous heat this weekend

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for Mississippi, forecasting severe weather and dangerous heat through the weekend.

A slight risk of severe storms is in effect for parts of north and northeast Mississippi today into early evening, according to the agency. Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible, the NWS said.

At the same time, heat will persist across the state each afternoon through Saturday, with heat index values reaching between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware by having multiple warning sources, limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours, drinking plenty of water, and taking frequent breaks if outside.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency emphasized the importance of never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, even briefly. Officials recommend following local meteorologists for the latest updates on the forecast and safety precautions.
