Habitat Management Strategies Can Reduce Predation on Wildlife

Predators are a natural part of most landscapes, but their impact on prey species depends on habitat conditions, according to wildlife experts. Managing vegetation and ground cover can influence predation rates and support wildlife populations.

Habitat management practices such as opening overstory canopies can increase sunlight and promote understory growth. Prescribed fire is another tool that encourages early successional habitat, benefiting nesting and brood-rearing areas.

Landowners can improve habitat diversity by dividing properties into burn units with different fire return intervals. Additionally, shaping vegetation patches to optimize food and cover availability can help protect prey species from predators.
