Mississippi is urging waterway users to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species during National Fishing and Boating Week. State officials emphasize the importance of following several simple steps to protect local ecosystems.
Boaters and anglers are advised to clean off visible plants from boats and recreational equipment, drain water from boats, bilge, live wells, and bait containers before leaving the waterbody, and dry their equipment between trips. These actions are designed to prevent invasive species from hitching rides to new locations.
Additionally, anglers are encouraged to dispose of all unwanted bait and fish parts in the trash before leaving the waterway. This helps reduce the risk of invasive species establishing in new areas.
