MDWFP warns black bears enter hyperphagia before winter

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks says black bears enter a fall feeding period called hyperphagia as winter approaches. MDWFP says the natural process helps bears prepare for colder months, even in Mississippi’s milder climate.

According to the agency, black bears can consume up to 20,000 calories a day during hyperphagia. MDWFP also says bears may gain as much as 30% of their body weight in just one or two months.

With bears actively searching for food, MDWFP urges people to follow six BearWise Basics: never feed or approach bears, secure food, trash and recycling, remove bird feeders when bears are active, never leave pet food outdoors, and clean and store grills and smokers.

The agency also says people should alert neighbors to bear activity and learn more at BearWise.org and MDWFP.com. MDWFP shared the guidance as a seasonal reminder about reducing bear conflicts around homes and neighborhoods.
