MEMA says 47 Mississippi counties are under burn bans

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said 47 Mississippi counties are now under active burn bans and told residents to follow the Mississippi Forestry Commission for the latest updates. The agency said counties shaded red on the state burn-ban map mean no outdoor burning of any kind is allowed, and more counties can be added at any time.

MEMA said the ban covers campfires, fire pits, burn barrels, brush and debris burning, and field burning. The agency said people should check the full listing regularly before starting any outdoor fire or using burning equipment, since the statewide restrictions can change as conditions do.

County sheriff's departments enforce the bans, MEMA said. Anyone who knowingly burns during a ban can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500 per violation.

The agency said enclosed gas or propane grills, gas heaters and charcoal grills are still permitted. MEMA's reminder asks residents to avoid outdoor burning while the active bans remain in effect across the state.
