MEMA warns of dangerous fire conditions across Mississippi Friday and Saturday

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Friday and Saturday bring dangerous fire conditions across Mississippi as a strong cold front moves through the state. MEMA said Red Flag Warnings are in effect today, with northwest winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph, low humidity and dry vegetation creating conditions that can let fires spread quickly.

MEMA urged residents to avoid outdoor burning, follow local burn bans and restrictions, secure trailer chains to prevent sparks and dispose of cigarettes properly. The agency said those precautions are especially important while windy, dry weather is in place.

A National Weather Service Jackson graphic shared with the post, titled "Significant Fire Danger Conditions Today and Saturday," was updated Friday at 3:50 a.m. The graphic says Level 3, or Significant, means wildfires will spread rapidly and open burning should not be attempted. It also says Level 2 fire danger makes fires more likely to escape control and discourages open burning, while Level 1 calls for extra caution.
