Alcorn County roundup, Oct. 8, 2026: Corinth approves playhouse lease; wildfire reports highlight burn ban

Corinth’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen has approved a one-year lease giving the Corinth Dramatic Society a home in the city-owned playhouse at 303 South Fulton Drive. The decision, made Tuesday, Oct. 6, also allows the nonprofit to use $12,000 allocated in the city’s new budget, according to Alcorn County News’ Thursday report citing the Daily Corinthian.

A new home for community theater

The lease follows Corinth Theatre-Arts’ unsuccessful eviction appeal and its Oct. 2 announcement that it would close permanently. The Dramatic Society had rehearsed in churches and rented the Corinth Coliseum for performances. Its first production date in the playhouse has not been announced.

The group’s next project, A Very Mississippi Christmas, is a joint production with Tippah County. Auditions are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Dixie Theatre in Ripley, with performances planned there Nov. 20–22 and in Corinth in early December. Highway 30 reopens after fires near Paden

Fires along Highway 30 between Paden and the Prentiss County line were extinguished and the road reopened, according to a Thursday update citing Tishomingo County News. Crews remained to address hot spots. The outlet reported a dragging chain as the cause, but no official agency had confirmed that explanation.

The Wednesday evening report, citing WTVA and Tishomingo County Fire Coordinator Shelly Davis, described multiple roadside fires and a response by four county fire departments, Prentiss County firefighters and the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Homes were not threatened at the time of that report. The newer story reports no injuries or building damage; acreage has not been released. Both reports note Alcorn County’s emergency burn ban continues through Oct. 12.

A separate story published Wednesday recounts forestry crews’ work on three fires on Sept. 29, including the two-acre Area 13 fire in northwest Tishomingo County. It features a nighttime photograph by Area Forester Drew Fletcher. Those fires occurred before this week’s Highway 30 incident.
