Emergency burn ban remains in force

The Alcorn County Fire Service issued the emergency ban Sept. 28 after several fires during prolonged hot, dry weather. It covers outdoor burning, including yard debris, leaves and brush, through Monday, Oct. 12, unless officials lift it sooner.

County fire officials told the Daily Corinthian that dry vegetation and limited firefighting resources contributed to the decision. The report lists exceptions for the Mississippi Forestry Commission, certified burn managers and agricultural burning. Residents should check with county fire officials or the Forestry Commission about whether a specific burn is permitted. Forecast rain does not automatically end the order.
