Corinth Weekend Rain Ends Dry Spell; Storms Return Tuesday
Corinth weekend rain is finally on the way. After a month of almost no rain across the Mid-South, the National Weather Service in Memphis says showers will spread across Alcorn, Prentiss, and Tishomingo counties Saturday night and keep going into Sunday. A second round of showers and thunderstorms is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday, after polls close on Election Day.
In its Saturday afternoon forecast discussion, the weather service called the change the end of a “long-standing dry weather pattern” after an arid October. Rainfall totals through Sunday are forecast at about an inch, with the heaviest amounts near the Tennessee River. That includes the Pickwick Lake and Tishomingo County area.
Corinth Weekend Rain: Halloween Night and Sunday
A forecast graphic NWS Memphis released at 1:37 p.m. Saturday shows rain chances in Corinth climbing through the evening:
- 5 p.m.: 30%
- 6 p.m.: 45%
- 7 p.m.: 65%
- 8 to 10 p.m.: 55% to 60%
- 11 p.m.: 65%
Temperatures will sit in the low to mid-70s this afternoon and cool into the 60s after sunset, so trick-or-treaters and anyone at late Halloween events should bring a rain jacket or umbrella. Showers will be mostly scattered early in the evening, and forecasters expect a few thunderstorms after midnight and into Sunday morning.
The point forecast for Corinth calls for a 90% chance of rain tonight, with a low around 54 that rises to about 57 overnight. New rainfall of a half to three-quarters of an inch is possible tonight. Sunday brings an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 4 p.m., a high near 66, and another quarter to half inch of rain.
Dry Monday, Then Election Day Storms
Monday looks dry and mild, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 73. Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, should start mostly dry. The forecast gives a 30% chance of showers after noon, a high near 75, and breezy south-southeast winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Rain chances rise to 80% Tuesday night as showers and thunderstorms move in, mainly after the polls close at 7 p.m. Showers and storms are likely Wednesday too. Forecasters said the midweek rain is less certain. Another inch is possible, but totals could come in well above or below that.
Voters who want to stay dry should plan to vote Tuesday morning or early afternoon. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone in line at closing time can still vote.
Drought and Fire Danger Relief
The rain should ease the fire danger that has built up across the region during the dry spell. NWS Memphis said humidity will rise well above 40% starting Saturday afternoon and stay there, and that wetting rain and heavy cloud cover should lower the fire weather danger over the next 48 hours.
Burn bans set by county boards of supervisors stay in effect until the boards lift them, so residents should check with their county before burning leaves or debris, even after the rain.
Weekend Weather Tips
- Slow down on wet roads, especially on the first rain after a long dry spell, when oil buildup makes pavement slick.
- Turn on headlights in rain and watch for trick-or-treaters in dark clothing Saturday night.
- Keep a way to get weather alerts handy overnight in case thunderstorms develop.
