Boaters urged to prioritize safety this Fourth of July weekend

Boaters heading out on the water for the Fourth of July weekend are advised to prioritize safety, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Before leaving the ramp, boaters should ensure they have all required safety equipment on board.

This includes Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone, which should be in good condition, properly fitting, and easily accessible. Children 12 and under must wear a PFD while the vessel is underway. Additionally, vessels 16 feet or longer should carry a throwable device, and a fire extinguisher and sound-producing device are also recommended. Boaters born after June 30, 1980, are required to carry a boater’s education card, and valid vessel registration should be on hand.

Authorities stress the importance of knowing waterway conditions, sharing a float plan with someone on land, and being prepared for changing weather. Those who are weak swimmers are advised to wear a life jacket at all times. Recent flooding has increased hazards on waterways, with submerged debris and stronger currents posing additional risks.
